EAGLE CITY

UP THE creek beyond Pritchard, a lumber camp and a sawmill stand on the site of Eagle City. When gold-bearing sands were found in Pritchard and Eagle creeks in 1883, a camp, known for a few months as the “Capital of the Coeur d’Alenes,” sprang up at the junction of the two. Someone saw an empty eagle’s nest high in a tree and suggested that the place be called Eagle City. Tents made of dirty canvas and ragged blankets served as shelters until a sawmill, hauled in on sleds through Fourth of July Canyon and by boat up the North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River, began to turn out lumber for cabins.
